This strikingly colourful flower was photographed last Sunday in Chipstead Bottom, south of Banstead Wood, Surrey last Sunday. It might be Viper's-bugloss,
Echium vulgare. It is more colourful than my reference books show and is late flowering as well, along with many other plants this year.

This meadow in Chipstead Bottom is one of the finest that you might imagine -- awash with orchids earlier in the year and still now in October full of colourful flowers. In the foreground you can see the Common Rock-rose.

This calcareous meadow is worth a special visit at any time of year.

Have just walked the dog through Chipstead Bottom & can only say the echiums have got even better. Quite stunning.It is a rather special place
