World Environment Day; wildflowers in a domestic garden

By mowing only once or twice a year after flowers have set seed, sections of lawn are now a riot of colour and teeming with bees, beetles and other insects.

Yellow rattle is now also flowering from seed spread last autumn.  This will reduce the vigour of the grasses allowing other species to thrive.  How much more beautiful and species rich is such a lawn compared to those which may be close mown and drenched in weedkiller and fertiliser.
