St Mark's flies, Bibio marci, yesterday on Chailey Common

Suddenly and briefly for a week or so there are lots of little black flies everywhere in the countryside.  Here in East Sussex.
Full info' on these flies at https://www.buglife.org.uk/bugs/bug-directory/st-marks-fly/?fbclid=IwAR3tCwE1XDCkyMGqzbQ_ScZxAp8xw5iAbGP9lbhBLdtZGtB9VAmBuN9QaDA

Their sole purpose in their brief flight period is to mate, for the female to lay eggs in the soil and then die.
 Here is a mating pair.
